One of my earlier works as a student in an small but very influential (on me at least) class of art with Derakhshani's brothers in Semnan, Iran.
1. Medium: Oil on Canvas
2. Shapes and objects: A Middle Eastern or Central Asian landscape featuring a large conical structure, likely a mausoleum or shrine. A body of water (possibly a river or lake) is in the foreground with three small figures that appear to be ducks. There's a tree on the left side and some vegetation on the right. The background shows some buildings or structures and trees.
3. Colours: Predominantly earth tones. The central structure is painted in beige and light brown. The water is a muted green-grey. The sky is a pale, washed-out blue. Touches of green for vegetation. The background structures are in muted yellows and browns.
4. Narrative: This painting depicts a scene that appears to be from an Islamic cultural context, possibly in Iran or Central Asia. The central structure, likely a mausoleum, dominates the composition, suggesting its cultural and spiritual significance. The presence of water and ducks adds a touch of everyday life to this otherwise monumental scene. The overall atmosphere is one of quiet reverence and historical permanence. The painting evokes a sense of cultural heritage and the coexistence of nature and human-made structures in a traditional landscape.
5. Original Artist: While this is an original work by Mehrdad Fahimi (as evidenced by the signature in the bottom right), the style and subject matter are reminiscent of orientalist paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Artists like David Roberts or Edward Lear, who traveled to the Middle East and painted scenes of local architecture and landscapes, come to mind.
However, Fahimi's approach is more understated and less romanticized than typical orientalist works. The simplified forms and muted colors also bring to mind some of the architectural studies of John Singer Sargent, particularly his watercolors from his travels in the Middle East.
This painting continues the tradition of capturing architectural and cultural landmarks in their natural settings, but with a more contemporary and personal interpretation. It showcases Fahimi's ability to convey a sense of place and cultural identity through architectural elements and landscape.
