One of my earlier works as a student in an small but very influential (on me at least) class of art with Derakhshani's brothers in Semnan, Iran.
1. Medium: Oil on Canvas
2. Shapes and objects: A dramatic sunset or sunrise scene over water. The focal point is a large tree silhouetted against the colorful sky. There's a small boat with two figures visible on the water. In the background, there's a suggestion of a cityscape or distant buildings. Birds are flying in the sky.
3. Colours: Vibrant, warm tones dominate the sky - oranges, yellows, and reds blending into cooler blues at the top. The tree and other foreground elements are painted in dark silhouette. The water reflects the warm colors of the sky. The distant buildings are rendered in muted purples and blues.
4. Narrative: This painting captures a moment of extraordinary natural beauty, likely at sunset. The dramatic sky creates a powerful backdrop for the silhouetted elements, giving the scene an almost dreamlike quality. The small boat with figures adds a human element, suggesting themes of journey or exploration. The city in the background provides a contrast between nature and civilization. Overall, the painting evokes a sense of awe at the beauty of nature, as well as feelings of peace and contemplation. The scene could be interpreted as metaphorical, perhaps representing a journey through life with the dramatic sky symbolizing both challenges and beauty along the way.
5. Original Artist: While this is an original work by Mehrdad Fahimi, the style and subject matter are reminiscent of the later works of British artist J.M.W. Turner, known for his expressive, almost abstract renderings of light and atmosphere, particularly in maritime scenes.
However, the more defined silhouette of the tree and the inclusion of recognizable elements like the boat and cityscape also bring to mind some of the works of contemporary Chinese-American artist Thomas Leung, known for his vibrant sunset paintings.
A comparable work might be Turner's "The Fighting Temeraire" (1839), though Fahimi's painting has its own unique elements and a more contemporary feel. Turner's works can be found in major museums worldwide, including the National Gallery in London.
This painting continues the tradition of using dramatic natural phenomena as a subject for artistic expression. It showcases Fahimi's skill in using watercolor to create vivid, emotive scenes that blend realistic elements with a more expressive, almost abstract approach to color and light.
