The original belongs to Rowland Hilder and is called Oast Houses near Shoreham Kent. I did the work in a period that was in love with his landscapes. Still vastness of the landscapes capture me.
1. Medium: Watercolor on paper
2. Shapes and objects:
- A cluster of farm buildings in the middle ground, including:
- At least four distinct structures with steep, triangular roofs (oast houses or hop kilns)
- A larger central building with a gabled roof
- Several smaller outbuildings or sheds
- A plowed or furrowed field in the foreground, taking up about a third of the image
- Three prominent trees on the left side of the painting:
- Two tall trees with bare branches
- One shorter, bushier tree with some foliage
- Distant trees or hedgerows lining the horizon
- Faint suggestions of hills in the far background
- A possible greenhouse or polytunnel structure on the right side
- Subtle indications of fences or property boundaries
- Complex, layered clouds dominating the sky
3. Colours:
- Sky: Predominantly warm beige with variations of gray and subtle hints of green
- Buildings: Warm browns for the walls, darker brown for roof outlines
- Oast house roofs: Rich, deep reddish-brown
- Plowed field: Various shades of brown, from light tan to deep umber, with streaks of darker earth
- Trees: Dark brown for trunks and branches, with touches of beige for remaining foliage
- Distant landscape: Muted greens and browns, blending into the horizon
- Overall palette: Earthy and warm, dominated by browns, beiges, and muted greens
4. Narrative: This painting depicts a quintessential rural English scene, likely in Kent or Sussex given the presence of oast houses. The image captures the essence of late autumn or early winter, with bare trees and plowed fields suggesting the end of the harvest season. The cluster of farm buildings, centered around the distinctive oast houses, provides a strong focal point and speaks to the agricultural heritage of the region. The expansive sky with its complex cloud formations adds drama and a sense of changing weather, typical of the English countryside.
5. Original Artist: While this is an original work by Mehrdad Fahimi, the style and subject matter strongly evoke the tradition of English landscape painting, particularly the works of John Constable. The attention to architectural detail, the careful rendering of cloud formations, and the focus on rural agricultural scenes are all reminiscent of Constable's approach. However, Fahimi's use of watercolor gives the scene a softer, more ethereal quality than Constable's oil paintings. The composition and muted color palette also bring to mind some of the rural scenes painted by Eric Ravilious in the early 20th century.
