This work was done from a postcard that a friend of mine sent from Sweden. I do not know the original artist. I think I added those bars myself. I do not know who took this from me. I only have a picture of the work.
1. Medium: Watercolor on paper
2. Shapes and objects: A portrait of a young woman holding a small child or baby. The woman has long, light-colored hair and is looking directly at the viewer. The child's head is resting on the woman's shoulder, facing away from the viewer. They appear to be framed by a window or doorway.
3. Colours: The palette is muted and warm. The woman's hair is painted in shades of golden brown. Her face has soft, natural skin tones. The child is wearing a striped garment with red and white. The background is predominantly beige and brown tones.
4. Narrative: This painting captures an intimate moment between a woman (likely a mother) and a child. The direct gaze of the woman creates a connection with the viewer, while the child's posture suggests comfort and trust. The framing effect of the window or doorway adds a sense of intimacy and domesticity to the scene. Overall, the painting evokes feelings of maternal love, protection, and the quiet beauty of everyday moments in family life.
5. Original Artist: While this is an original work by Mehrdad Fahimi, the style and subject matter are reminiscent of the mother and child paintings of American artist Mary Cassatt. Cassatt was known for her sensitive portrayals of women and children, often in domestic settings.
However, Fahimi's use of watercolor and the more contemporary feel of the composition also brings to mind some of the figurative works of British artist Lucian Freud, particularly in the direct gaze and the intimate portrayal of the subjects.
A comparable work might be Cassatt's "Mother and Child" series, though Fahimi's painting has its own unique elements and a more modern sensibility. Cassatt's works can be found in major museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
This painting continues the tradition of intimate portraiture, focusing on the bond between mother and child. It showcases Fahimi's skill in using watercolor to create a sense of softness and warmth, while also capturing the emotional depth of the subjects. The painting offers a tender and personal view of family life, inviting the viewer to connect with the universal themes of love and care.
