This was done from location close to my Uni at Manchester on a typically rainy day.
1. Medium: Watercolor on paper
2. Shapes and objects: An urban street scene featuring a prominent clock tower or church spire in the background. The foreground shows a wide street or boulevard with reflections, suggesting recent rain. Buildings line both sides of the street, with varying architectural styles. A few small figures can be seen walking on the street. There's a sign visible on one of the buildings that reads "ARCADE".
3. Colours: Predominantly muted tones. Beige and light brown for the buildings and street. Grey for the sky and reflections. Touches of blue and green on some buildings. The clock tower has a hint of green on its dome.
4. Narrative: This painting captures a quiet moment in an urban setting, likely after a rainstorm given the reflections on the street. The prominent clock tower serves as a focal point and landmark, anchoring the scene in a specific place and time. The mix of architectural styles suggests a historic city center that has evolved over time. The few pedestrians and the overall muted palette create a sense of calm, perhaps early morning or evening. The "ARCADE" sign hints at the commercial nature of the area.
5. Original Artist: While this is an original work by Mehrdad Fahimi, the style and subject matter are reminiscent of the urban scenes painted by English artist L.S. Lowry, known for his distinctive cityscapes. However, Fahimi's use of watercolor and more detailed architectural rendering also brings to mind some of the street scenes of American artist Edward Hopper.
The loose, fluid style of the watercolor and the attention to light and reflection are also reminiscent of the urban watercolors of British artist John Sell Cotman, though with a more modern subject.
This painting continues the tradition of urban landscape art, capturing the essence of city life through architecture and atmosphere. It showcases Fahimi's skill in using watercolor to create a sense of place and mood, blending architectural detail with atmospheric effects. The painting offers a contemplative view of urban life, highlighting the interplay between historic architecture and the quiet moments of daily city existence.
