The yellow house from van Gogh and specially the yellow color was very tempting. The house was the right wing of 2 Place Lamartine, Arles, France, where, on May 1, 1888, van Gogh rented four rooms.
1. Medium: Watercolor on paper
2. Shapes and objects: A vibrant street scene in a Mediterranean or Southern European style town. The focal point is a corner building with a yellow facade. Other buildings line the street, including white and beige structures. There's a tree on the left side of the painting. A street lamp is visible. Several small figures of people can be seen walking on the street. In the distance, there appears to be an archway or bridge.
3. Colours: Vivid blue dominates the sky. The buildings are painted in various shades, with a bright yellow for the main building, whites and beiges for others. The street is a light tan or beige. Green is used for the tree foliage. Small touches of various colors are used for the figures and details.
4. Narrative: This painting captures the lively atmosphere of a sunny day in a charming town, possibly in a place like Italy, Spain, or Greece. The bright colors and clear sky suggest a warm, pleasant climate. The presence of people on the streets adds a sense of life and activity to the scene. The architecture, with its distinctive yellow building and the distant archway, gives the town a unique character and hints at its history. Overall, the painting evokes feelings of warmth, leisure, and the simple pleasures of daily life in a picturesque setting.
5. Original Artist: While this is an original work by Mehrdad Fahimi, the style and subject matter are strongly reminiscent of the street scenes painted by Maurice Utrillo, a French painter known for his cityscapes of Paris, particularly Montmartre.
This work resembles The Yellow House (1888) by Vincent van Gogh which is a vibrant oil painting that depicts the artist’s rented home in Arles, France, where he hoped to establish a community of artists. The painting shows a bright yellow building against a blue sky, emphasizing Van Gogh’s characteristic use of bold, contrasting colors. The house sits at a corner, surrounded by streets and adjacent structures, while details like green shutters and small figures add life to the scene. This work reflects Van Gogh’s optimism and his desire for companionship during this period, despite his growing mental struggles.
However, Fahimi's use of brighter colors and the Mediterranean-like setting also brings to mind some of the works of Raoul Dufy, a French Fauvist painter known for his colorful and playful depictions of the French Riviera and other Mediterranean locations.
A comparable work might be Utrillo's paintings of Montmartre streets, though Fahimi's painting has its own unique elements and a brighter, more vibrant palette. Utrillo's works can be found in major museums worldwide, including the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris.
While Fahimi's painting is clearly his own, it seems to blend influences from both Utrillo's architectural precision and Dufy's joyful use of color, creating a scene that feels both familiar and freshly interpreted.
